Do LaurenHill Academy Students Hold the Power to Influence Decisions?

Day-to-day decisions are made at LaurenHill Academy, and the greater student population raises the question; do they have any influential power? The answer is yes.

LaurenHill Academy is home to many committees whose purpose is to make decisions, to better the lives of LHA students. Therefore, students should hold the power to influence these decisions.

The decisions made within the walls of LaurenHill Academy mainly revolve around our students. Joseph Daugher, a secondary five student, says that in his past experiences, whenever he has raised concerns about something, he has experienced change thanks to his teachers’ understanding of his problems. Proving that students are often times taken into consideration when the time comes for decisions to be made, such as the uniform shoe policy.

The staff and teachers are both understanding and easily approachable when it comes to the concerns of their students. According to Ms. Najarian, a teacher on Senior Campus, even though teachers may have a bad reputation, either because they are strict or because students may disagree with them, they will always support their students in a worthy cause, like a change in the academic curriculum. She concluded by stating that once you know the hierarchy, students can accomplish something and make sure they are heard. In other words, the teachers will always hear their students out, earning students the power to influence the staff’s decisions.

From an administrator’s point of view, all students are always taken into consideration. “Whether it touches base with their academics or extracurricular activities, the overall wants and needs of students are always applied if relevant.” says Mrs. Limperopoulos, Vice-Principal at LaurenHill Academy. The administrative team bases their final decisions on a generalized level, meaning when a group of students is affected, something will be done, just as for a single student. Overall, administration does take students opinions into consideration, behind closed doors.

At the end of the day, schools are in existence thanks to its students. From parents to administrators, everyone is in support of the students. LaurenHill Academy’s students now know from a student’s, a teacher’s and an administrator’s point of view, that students can influence decisions. After all, maybe if it weren’t for the students wanting of one, there would be no hockey team this year. Students hold a power, which should be exercised if we ever want to create a meaningful change.
